The comments came after it was revealed on Thursday that the 35-year-old had offered to come out of retirement on the eve of the announcement of the final 15-man squad for the World Cup. The former Pakistani cricketer also accused De Villiers of choosing money over country as he asserted that the former Proteas captain's decision to quit was exclusively based on monetary gains. Akhtar then accused AB de Villiers of prioritising money over the country.

Linda Zondi, the convener of the Proteas selection panel, also said that a sudden inclusion of de Villiers would have done injustice to players who had filled the void after AB de Villiers departure. "This is big news but why is he issuing such statements when South Africa are down and out", Akhtar was quoted as saying by CricTracker. De Villiers was also told, if he wanted to be available for the World Cup, then he would have to make himself available for the matches against Pakistan and Sri Lanka, "and he didn't". "However, he chose the IPL and PSL, announced an early retirement and recused himself from the World Cup", said Shoaib in his video.

The recent news of former South Africa captain AB de Villiers wanting to take part in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 hasn't gone down well with some section of the cricketing fraternity.

The former West Indies pacer, who has been coaching South Africa since August 2017, said that the door for a possible return for de Villiers was open till December 2018 after which South Africa played Pakistan and Sri Lanka before the start of the World Cup.

"He took this decision keeping in mind his finances". The money will come today or tomorrow but you the call of making money and ignore the World Cup.

"You had these last two years. It's sad that you chose money over country".

Shoaib Akhtar also believes that the South Africa team management made the right decision in turning down AB de Villiers' request to play for his national team again.

"Suddenly we've come to the World Cup and we've had one bad week, and AB is the saviour, but the guy is retired, he's made his decision, and we have to live with the decision that he's made".

"There are lot more people wanting AB to be here than AB himself. But I told them that I do not care about the ban because what matters most is that I want to represent my country". Kerry Packer happened and it was wrong.

"I was offered a lot of money by ICL but spurned the offer because I wanted to play for Pakistan".

"So be a man and do not go after money because you have made enough money".

"You shouldn't have to beg a player to play for his country".
