Ortiz was able to sit up and take some steps on last night and this morning and is said to be "making good progress toward recovery".

Garcia made an initial court appearance in Santo Domingo Tuesday night and remains in police custody. Doctors in the Dominican Republic removed his gallbladder and part of his intestine.

Police have said the driver of the motorcycle carrying the gunman was captured and beaten by a crowd of people at the bar.

Fans hold up signs showing support for former Red Sox player David Ortiz prior to the start of the game against the Texas Rangers at Fenway Park on June 10, 2019 in Boston, Massachusetts.

"I am so disappointed to know that someone like David who saved so many lives can have someone after his life", he said.

According to Latin American sports journalist Hector Gomez, the guy who was responsible for firing off the shots at the former Boston slugger claims he "didn't know" he was ordered to shoot the legend, as he was only given information on what the person was wearing.

Ortiz was shot in his native Dominican Republic on Sunday night. Surveillance video from the night club identified Garcia as the assailant and shows him walk up behind Ortiz at the club while the 43-year-old former World Series MVP was in the middle of a conversation with another man and shoot him in the back.

The details were contained in a court document obtained by the Associated Press on Wednesday.

The officials declined to speculate about possible motives behind the shooting, other than to rule out a robbery attempt, but they said the alleged coordinator behind the attack was among those arrested, and that the group was paid 400,000 Dominican pesos, or about $7,800 dollars, to carry it out.
