Cyclone Vayu to hit Gujarat on June 13

The cyclonic storm is very likely to cross Gujarat coast between Veraval and Diu by early morning of 13 th June 2019.

The IMD has put Gujarat on alert with likely Cyclone Vayu closing in on the Arabian Sea coast bringing heavy rains and winds sweeping across parts of the state at speed ranging from 75 km per hour to a maximum of 135 km. The storm strengthened from a deep depression to a cyclone on Tuesday and is likely to develop into a severe cyclonic storm by Wednesday.

Sarkar said the severe cyclonic storm is likely to cause heavy rains and winds in the coastal districts of Saurashtra, like Bhavnagar, Amreli, Junagadh, Jamangar, Porbandar, Dwarka and also Kutch.

On Monday the State experienced gusty winds with speeds of 35 to 40kmph.


According to an IMD advisory, the "Wind speed is very likely to increase further becoming gale wind speed reaching 90-100 kmph gusting to 115 kmph over east-central & adjoining northeast Arabian Sea". Yet, it warned fishermen from venturing into the sea till June 13.

A distant warning number 2 (DW-2) signal has been hoisted at the major ports of Gujarat to alert locals as well as fishermen, Sarkar said.

"The system now is seen as a depression over the Southeast and East Central Arabian Sea and is centered at 11.2°N and 71°E, around 800 km South-Southwest of Mumbai", according to skymetweather.com.

Gujarat has already been put on high alert in view of the incoming cyclone and precautionary measures are being put into place. "The government is also monitoring the situation along with the MeT department and ISRO".


IMD has forecast moderate to heavy showers over the coast for the next four days till June 14.

The Gujarat government has deployed 15 teams of NDRF personnel in Saurashtra and Kutch from Tuesday morning.

In an advisory for Gujarat ports, Gujarat Maritime Board CEO Mukesh Kumar said, "All port users, stakeholders and agents are advised to take all necessary precautions and advise all the vessels arriving at Gujarat ports".

Cities of Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Gandhinagar, Bhuj, Surat, and Veraval will also see some rainfall activities in view of Cyclone Vayu, resulting in the abatement of heat wave from many pockets.
