All X-Men Movies Ranked Best to Worst, By Rotten Tomatoes Rating

Longtime X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner takes to Twitter to react to the release of X-Men: Dark Phoenix but deletes the tweet.

X-Men: "Dark Phoenix" stars Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, Evan Peters, Alexandra Shipp, Tye Sheridan and Kodi Smit-McPhee.

But now, with the Disney-Fox merger, this version of the "X-Men" franchise is coming to an end.

Historically, the franchise has performed well internationally, however with its $200 million production budget and a 23% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it's not looking promising. We need to understand how these new X-Men relate to each other to have an ending as impactful as Civil War.

For now, you can catch Dark Phoenix in theaters. She stated that she had "zero, nothing to do with Dark Phoenix, or Apocalypse, or New Mutants". Now that Disney is in control of Fox's assets, the film has been pushed back once again to April 2020, which has understandably not inspired much confidence in fans. After "X-Men: Days of Future Past" very poignantly reversed all the events of the critically panned "X-Men: The Last Stand" basically making the film irrelevant in the franchise's canon, "Dark Phoenix" was a second stab at the Dark Phoenix storyline.

Set in 1992, the film follows Jean Grey (Turner), a powerful mutant who is exposed to a mysterious energy in space that greatly enhances her powers, but also brings out a darker side to her. It is the culmination of 20 years of X-Men movies, as the family of mutants that we've come to know and love must face their most devastating enemy yet - one of their own.

But I wouldn't expect, when the time comes, for any of the current franchise players to return when the X-Men are eventually brought into the MCU. If you ask me, they should have just stuck to the earlier timeline and didn't rush to connect the dots with the first generation of X-Men.

Dark Phoenix is set to hit theaters on June 7, 2019.
