Iger wouldn't comment on what their film will be about, when it will be set, or any additional details about its production.

There was a whole lot of buzz when Lucasfilm dropped the very first teaser for Star Wars: Episode IX during Star Wars Celebration last month.

Iger spoke of the decision to wait that long for more Star Wars at the summit. "The next movie that we release will be theirs", said Iger, talking about Weiss and Benioff. "We haven't said anything more beyond what we've announced on the next film".

Speaking at the MoffettNathanson Media & Communications Summit, Iger discussed the future of the franchise and how the studio is planning on filling the gaps between the final primary installment The Rise of Skywalker and the first installment of the next trilogy, which is slated for a December 2022 release. We're actually hard at work doing that already, ' he added.

After releasing five films since purchasing Lucasfilm in 2012 - The Force Awakens, Rogue One, The Last Jedi, Solo, and now The Rise of Skywalker - he said he believed "it would be smart for us to take a bit of a hiatus while we figure out what's next".

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker opens up December 20th, 2019, wrapping up the trilogy that J.J. Abrams kicked off four years ago.

There are two more "Star Wars" films beyond 2022 on Disney's release calendar, in 2024 and 2026, but it's not even clear yet if those films will come from the "Game of Thrones" team. They're set to alternate with James Cameron's planned Avatar sequels, which start in 2021 and are expected to continue every other year through 2027. Two of them we knew about-Jon Favreau's The Mandalorian and a prequel to Rogue One starring Diego Luna-but there is also, apparently, a mystery third series at some stage of development, according to Disney CEO Bob Iger.
