Stam: Ajax star De Ligt would be good fit for Liverpool

Former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam believes Matthijs de Ligt would be best off signing for a club like Liverpool or Barcelona.

The teenager is already a mainstay for Ajax and the Dutch national team, while he's been one of the stars of this season's Champions League.

'The player asked for more money than agreed because their price had risen, according to club sources.

And, according to Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague, Liverpool have "been talking" with De Ligt as they consider weighing up a move for the Holland global.

Reports in Spain are strongly suggesting that De Ligt will follow suit and joining his compatriot would certainly make sense, even if it would prove a double blow to Ajax. "The fact that they won this award is an additional motivation for me to get as much as possible in my career as well", De Ligt said.

The 19-year-old centre-back is one of the hottest properties in Europe this season.

The allure of resuming his centre-back partnership with Virgil van Dijk could certainly be appetising and many players are allured by the chance to work under Jurgen Klopp.

The news will come as a huge blow to his Premier League suitors.

It will be easy to convince him to move to Anfield as Barcelona are trying to close him on down and the likes of Paris Saint Germain, Bayern Munich, Juventus and Manchester City remain coy on the defender.

He has been valued at around £60million for his signature and De Ligt is prepared to keep his options open.

Last season the Catalan giants threw away a three goal lead against Roma in the quarter finals and this season they repeated the trick in the semis against Liverpool.

Will Ajax lose any more players?
