Two window washers were trapped for almost an hour on a dangling basket at the top of a 50-story skyscraper in Oklahoma.

Video from the scene showed the basket making extreme movements through the air, being picked up and moved around by heavy gusts of wind.

Several windows of the building were broken as the scaffold swung around.

Firefighters managed to secure the lift that was dangling from the top of the building and pull the two to safety about 8.30am after half an hour.

Locals were asked to avoid the area around the 50-floor Devon Tower as the situation unfolded.

Terrifying footage captured the basket as it swung out of control while firefighters tried to rescue the workers from the Devon Tower in Oklahoma City.

Paramedics evaluated the men and both refused to be treated. He said the cause of the accident is under investigation.

The corporate offices of the Oklahoma City-based energy company Devon Energy Corp are located in the Devon Tower.
