A police officer who pulled over Rodney Puckett on Interstate 10 in Eloy, Arizona, on Monday was talking to the elderly man during the traffic stop when he noticed that a dead woman was sitting next to him.

Rodney told officers his wife, Linda Puckett, 74, died at a hotel in Texas.

According to police, Puckett's home was three states away in Oklahoma, and he said that he and his wife had been on a trip. The order was granted on February 6 and continued on Monday, according to court records obtained by ABC15.

He told officers that he dragged her body to their vehicle before continuing the journey towards their destination.

The Sand Springs Police Department said Rodney and Linda were estranged when the Silver Alert was issued.

Officials say they were tipped off to the situation after a fast food employee called police, saying a man and woman were naked in the vehicle.

Linda's remains were taken to the Pinal County Medical Examiner to determine her cause of death, and police say they are working with authorities in Texas to find if there is any evidence of a homicide.

"I have been in law enforcement and with the Eloy Police Department for 17 years and this is the most freakish case I have ever seen in Eloy", said Eloy Police Department Sgt. Kristie Barnette.

After Rodney Puckett was found, he was facing a charge of evading.

Mr Puckett, from Oklahoma, was charged with abandonment or concealment of a body.

Earlier footage showed the couple from Sand Springs, Okla., walking into the room Sunday. According to Eloy Police, it is now classified as a "death investigation".
