Ozil says he ‘absolutely’ wants to remain at Arsenal beyond this summer

"It's a good result, but the second leg is going to be very hard and maybe different".

But he came up trumps last night, with a little help from calamity keeper Neto, who was so bad his performance should have been accompanied with a Benny Hill soundtrack.

So it was left to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to give them a two-goal cushion with a late volley from a Sead Kolasinac cross.

"With all respect to Arsenal, I have nothing to prove to them anymore", he said.

Mesut Ozil is now the highest paid footballer in the Arsenal squad and selling him off will undoubtedly free up a lot of money for Unai Emery. At this moment we concede too many goal on set pieces. The midfielder has agreed to join Juventus on a free transfer when his contract expires this summer and has played his last game for Arsenal having been ruled out for the rest of the campaign with a hamstring injury.

He was lucky to escape punishment for a studs-up tackle right on Mouctar Diakhaby's ankle, and from the resulting free kick Valencia nearly scored.

The visitors could easily have scored more, with centre-back Ezequiel Garay somehow missing from a couple of yards out with the goal gaping.

Mouctar Diakhaby towered above the Arsenal back line just 11 minutes into the tie, out-jumping three opponents to nod home from close range and expose a frailty which has been lingering for some time.

The wing-back attempted to head a loose ball back to Petr Cech after the goalkeeper had pushed Parejo's shot away but could only direct it onto the boot of the onrushing Goncalo Guedes for the ball to drop over the crossbar.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, right, celebrates with Alexandre Lacazette after scoring Arsenal's third goal.

"We'll miss him", added Özil. The Frenchman looked offside but with no VAR it would have counted.

Valencia, losing semifinalists in 2012 and 2014, would have been reasonably content heading back to Spain with a 2-1 defeat but they switched off in the dying seconds.
