Hollywood star Doris Day, whose films made her one of the biggest female stars of all time, has died aged 97.

"Day had been in excellent physical health for her age, until recently contracting a serious case of pneumonia, resulting in her death", the foundation said in a statement. Her natural talent for music was established early in her life, when she began singing at 15 and received a recording contract with Columbia Records in 1947. Her first hit, "Sentimental Journey", in 1945, was recorded while serving as the vocalist in Les Brown's band.

In 1953, she landed the title role of "Calamity Jane", and success continued in 1955 as she teamed with Frank Sinatra for the musical "Young at Heart" and with James Cagney for the drama "Love Me or Leave Me".

BREAKING: Doris Day, whose wholesome screen presence stood for a time of innocence in '60s films, has died, her foundation says. Usually, at least one song from any given film's soundtrack became a hit on the music charts.

Doris Day met Al Jorden, a trombonist, when she was only 16 and was known as Doris Kappelhoff, according to UK Standard. Day later starred opposite Clark Gable in 1958 comedy Teacher's Pet.

In "Pillow Talk", released in 1959 and her first of three films with Rock Hudson, she proudly caught up with what she called "the contemporary in me". Her movies may come from another time - and even then more of a confection than a reflection - but utterly charming.

"She was a wonderful friend to us and a lovely and very talented lady", singer Tony Bennett said on Twitter.

When her third husband, film producer Martin Melcher, died in 1968, Day was shocked to learn that he and his business partner, Jerome Bernard Rosenthal, had squandered her earnings for 17 years.

Day was well known for playing innocent, chaste characters, causing some critics to dub her "the World's Oldest Virgin". Her only child, son Terry, was born in 1942, and the couple divorced the following year.

A radiant beauty, Doris Day symbolised much of the American spirit. It was a passion that she kept up with for the rest of her life.

How hard it was to read that Doris Day passed away today?

During her career, Doris Day won a Grammy Award, several Golden Globes and also recorded a collaborative album, Duet, with the André Previn trio. Once you get going, there are nearly too many Doris Days to count. Also just as bold were her accessories: think oversized collars, satin gloves, intricate necklaces and always a swipe of red lipstick. But she leaves behind an awesome legacy of work on film and in music, and she'll be remembered forever by many generations.
