Huawei well-prepared for U.S. trade ban, says CEO

As a result, Google planned to prevent Huawei from licensing its Android mobile operating system and forcing the firm to use a public version of Android obtained through the Android Open Source Project.

The order to USA companies could affect tens of millions of consumers in Europe, its biggest market outside mainland China.


Abraham Liu, Huawei's envoy in Brussels, played up what he said were his firm's common interests with Europe and pledged to go the "extra mile" to ease European Union security concerns over rolling out 5G technology.

On Tuesday, the United States temporarily eased the trade restrictions on Huawei, allowing the firm to continue buying USA goods until August 19 to maintain existing telecoms networks and provide software updates to its smartphones.

Huawei said it would continue to provide security updates and after-sales services to all existing Huawei and Honor smartphones and tablet products, covering those that have been sold and those that are still in stock globally.


The U.S. government said it imposed the restrictions because of Huawei's involvement in activities contrary to national security or foreign policy interests.

The move has dire consequences for Huawei's smartphone ambitions, as ARM's technology forms the foundation of HiSilicon's Kirin chipsets. India, where Huawei now has only single-figure market share, is also potentially vital.

"We are reviewing the details of the executive order to understand any potential implications for our customers", Spain's Telefonica, Europe's third-largest mobile operator. In a statement from the OEM just after the news of the US Government legislation, Huawei went on to reassure current owners of Huawei and (subsidiary brand) Honor phones that they will continue to receive security updates and after-sales service.


The telecom company has always been accused by the United States of being able to use its network equipment to spy on foreign nations for the Chinese government.
