How to Download the Windows 10 May 2019 Update

If the update is available in your region, it will not be installed automatically, but rather offered as an available "Feature update to Windows 10, version 1903" that you can choose to "Download and install now".

The update includes a number of new features, including a new light theme and Windows Sandbox, and Microsoft said the rollout of the update would be implemented gradually to minimise the potential for widespread issues. Users who are interested in getting the new update will have to manually check for updates - and if you do receive the update, you can then download and install the update. If you really need the latest version like your life depends on it, you can head on over here to download Microsoft's Update Assistant or create an installation drive.

The result could be some rude surprise updates for people who thought they still had a few months of prep time left. Beyond that, however, Microsoft says that, for now at least, the update won't be automatically installed.

Open the Settings application with the Windows-I shortcut. In the meantime, users of Sophos Endpoint Security and Control and Sophos Central Endpoint Standard/Advanced have been advised to remove the "offending" Windows updates (KB4499164 or KB4499165) for the AVs to work, and delay the patching until Sophos delivers the update that will fix the conflict.

Activate the "check for updates" button. Then select Check for updates.

Note that Microsoft limits availability at this point and that the company is "slowly throttling up" the availability while it is monitoring data and feedback. This dashboard provides the present rollout status for an update, as well as any issues known to impact it. Microsoft will use this new dashboard to release information about the May 2019 update's progression. You can check which update blocks are in place here. It will be interesting to see if the extra two months of testing improved update quality significantly. This makes a great change from previous Windows 10 feature updates and means that uptake of the May update is likely to be severely impeded. Sadly, your old group messages will be lost during the upgrade, so copy any old chats that you want to keep on
