Manchester United reportedly turned down an opportunity to sign highly sought after Ajax star Matthijas de Ligt for what can only be perceived as a freakish reason.

Jurgen Klopp's side are one of many to be linked with De Ligt, and the defender has also hinted at a possible move to Anfield after previously admitting that playing alongside Van Dijk at club level would be great for his development.

Only 19 years of age, he is already captain of the historic club, who were cruelly knocked out in the semi-finals of the competition after Lucas Moura scored in the 95th minute to send Spurs through to the final against Liverpool. I don't know yet.

Barcelona want to make sure they win the race for his signature, but are aware that the likes of Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Manchester United are all keen on the Dutchman.

Ajax took a giant step towards winning the title on Sunday as they beat Utrecht 4-1 on Sunday, meaning they will be champions barring a final day miracle.

The story goes on to say Jose Mourinho wanted to sign De Ligt last summer but Manchester United vetoed a move to sign the Ajax star due to concerns about his future weight.

Ajax's brilliant campaign is likely to lead to the break-up of their talented young squad this summer, with midfielder Frenkie de Jong having already sealed a switch to the Camp Nou.

"He's been here since he was a child and will end up at a big club".

But while a deal did not materialise in January, De Ligt links with the Spanish champions have not subsided in the proceeding months. "I think he'll go to England or Spain".
