It is reportedly common for students at the university to climb the Keating Hall clock tower, touch the bell and take photos of the NY city skyline from outside one of its windows before they graduate.

Fordham was scheduled to hold a mass for Monfries on Sunday evening.

Police said Monfries and her friends snuck into the Keating Clock Tower around 3 a.m. Sunday and were going to try to climb to the top.

"I heard they were just getting a better view of the city", one senior student said. "I think they were posting on Instagram when it happened".

Monfries fell over 12m from the bell tower's staircase. Bob Howe, assistant vice president for communications, explained that "access to that tower is always locked". University officials are investigating how the students gained access to the tower.

In 2013, a school official told the Fordham Ram that the tower was "rather dangerous" and therefore "off limits" to students. They're unlocked at night when they're cleaning.

"She was with a group of friends ..."

"My roommate was with them".

"I feel so bad", Greene added.

He said Ms Monfries and her friends left the establishment an hour or two before it closed at 4am.

She was with other seniors when she fell through an opening on the first landing of the tower, the paper reported.

Sydney was studying journalism and interned at InStyle magazine - being set to graduate in May.

The university said they will confer a bachelor's degree upon Sydney posthumously.

USA media reported emergency services struggled to rescue gravely injured Ms Monfries from the building after they realised it wasn't possible to carry her via stretcher down the staircase.

She was rushed to hospital - being described in an "extremely critical condition" - where she died. "Theirs is an unimaginable loss, and we share their grief".
