Storms sweep across the South, killing 6 and injuring dozens

Trees were down throughout the hilly city on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi.

Trees were pulled from the ground by their roots and the tornado caused structural damage to buildings including tearing off roofs. Trees were down and at least some minor damage was reported in residential areas east of the campus.

Soaking rains could snarl the Monday morning commute on the East Coast before the storm moves off to sea.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports that a hospital clinic, some apartments, several storage units, a mechanic's shop and the Hamilton Volunteer Fire Department all had major damage from the tornado.

Two children died in Texas when a tree fell on a auto in which they were riding, and an elderly man was killed when a tree fell on his trailer in Hamilton, Mississippi.

In East Texas, the Angelina County Sheriff's Office said an 8-year-old and a 3-year-old died when strong winds toppled a tree onto the back of their family's vehicle in Lufkin while it was in motion. The children, ages 8 and 3, were dead at the scene, while both parents, who were in the front seat, escaped injury, he said.

In another storm death nearby, an unidentified victim's body was trapped in a vehicle submerged in floodwaters in Calhoun, Louisiana, Springfield said.

"Damaging winds and some hail are also associated with these storms pushing through the Southeast this morning", Brink said. Franklin is located about 125 miles (200 kilometers) south of Dallas.

Franklin is rebuilding after an EF-3 tornado tore through the community.

"This line is capable of producing damaging winds, large hail and possibly an isolated tornado", the weather service said. Crews will continue to survey the damage over the next few days.
