Peak gas prices coming to Washington over next few weeks

The average price of gas in California as of Monday is $3.76 a gallon - 25.4 cents higher than the same time previous year, according to GasBuddy.

So what is the best - and worst - day of the week to fill-up if you're trying to save a few bucks?

That's the advice of GasBuddy, the fuel-savings app that tracks real-time data from more than 150,000 gas stations throughout the country.

"California will soon be home to something not seen in almost five years: a statewide average of over $4 per gallon, with some of the largest cities there swelling to averages as high as $4.15 per gallon before any relief arrives".

A gallon of regular unleaded is just slightly cheaper in Orange and Ventura counties, where it costs an average of $3.85.

If your looking to avoid long lines, try to get to the pump on Monday or Tuesday between 7 10 a.m. The peak time when gas stations are busiest: 5 p.m. Friday. Wait times are the best then, too.

"The national average gas price has now risen for 2 months straight, tacking on a total of 50 cents per gallon in the last 90 days, which will cost Americans almost $200 million more at the pump today than back in early January", DeHaan said in a blog post on the fuel-tracking service's website Monday.

"Very early in the week, when gas stations are generally a little bit quieter traffic-wise, is a great time to fill up", said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy.

Wednesdays and Thursdays were good days to top off the tank, but not the best.

GasBuddy data showed that filling up on a Monday morning each week can collectively save drivers $2.1 billion.
