The measles virus can survive for up to two hours in the air where an infected person visited.

"We know that you need about 95 per cent of your population to be ammune to measles, to be vaccinated, [in order] to prevent spread, and we are very very close to that", she said. Anyone who is unsure about their vaccination history should check with their healthcare provider or visit to access official immunization records as recorded in the Children and Hoosier Immunization Registry Program (CHIRP).

While it's not good to see measles make its way into Ottawa, the city's Associate Medical Officer of Health does remain hopeful that it will not spread.

More than 93 percent of people who receive a single dose of MMR will develop immunity to measles, and more than 97 percent will be protected after receiving a second dose. It is rare in the United States due to the widespread availability of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine; however, visitors from other countries or USA citizens traveling overseas can become infected before or during travel. "But typically people by the time they are eight or nine years of age do get vaccinated", Dubey said.
