The measles virus can survive for up to two hours in the air where an infected person visited.

While it's not good to see measles make its way into Ottawa, the city's Associate Medical Officer of Health does remain hopeful that it will not spread.


More than 93 percent of people who receive a single dose of MMR will develop immunity to measles, and more than 97 percent will be protected after receiving a second dose. It is rare in the United States due to the widespread availability of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine; however, visitors from other countries or USA citizens traveling overseas can become infected before or during travel. The MMR vaccine is especially important for those who are traveling overseas.

Health officials are continuing to investigate a cluster of eight measles cases in the North State.


Since October, there have been at least 211 confirmed cases of measles in New York State. However, a large body of scientific research has proven there is no link between vaccines and the developmental disorder, even in children at high risk.

Coming down with measles is uncomfortable at best. Further, approximately 30 percent of measles patients have complications including pneumonia or encephalitis, which is inflammation of the brain.

CDC data showed 372 cases in the civilian population in 2018.


QUEENSLAND health authorities have warned about a measles outbreak in Townsville with two new cases confirmed, both linked to another man who was diagnosed with the highly contagious virus last week.
