The Lakers' job became available on Friday, when the franchise and former head coach Luke Walton agreed to part ways.

Just a small example of the headache that comes along with being the Lakers' President of Basketball Operations, especially when you've got a character like LaVar Ball behind the scenes.

Joerger's record with the Kings was unimpressive in the aggregate, going 98-148 in his three years with the team, but he led them to their best record this past season since 2005-06, going 39-43.

Kings general manager Vlade Divac was reported to have met Walton on Saturday and was in the "late stages" of finalising a multi-year deal. When Ball contacted the team about the planned procedure, that's when he was made aware by Los Angeles Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka that his contract could be voided by the surgery.

"I want to thank Jeanie Buss and the Buss family for giving me the opportunity to coach the Lakers", Walton said. "This franchise and the city will always be special to me and my family".

The Lakers had cursory discussions with Walton's representatives on Wednesday in which they discussed whether there was a way forward, multiple sources told ESPN's Ramona Shelburne. There's confidence on both sides that a deal can be reached.

Before hiring Joerger in 2016, the Kings interviewed Sam Mitchell, Vinny Del Negro, Mike Woodson, David Blatt, Mark Jackson, Jeff Hornacek, Nate McMillan, Patrick Ewing and Corliss Williamson.
