Bruins Drop Game One 4-1

At this point, it shouldn't come as a surprise.

That's why there is quiet optimism surrounding the Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender heading into Game 2 of the best-of-7 Eastern Conference First Round against the Boston Bruins at TD Garden on Saturday (8 p.m. ET; NBC, CBC, TVAS).

William Nylander likes to enjoy a big bowl of chicken noodle soup before the Maple Leafs play on the road. "When we play right, it's hard to stop us".

Leafs defenceman Jake Muzzin, who knows about championship-calibre goaltending from his two Stanley Cups with the Los Angeles Kings, said Andersen's demeanour helps set him apart. "He's nearly one step ahead, to be honest".

"He's an elite player in the league at a young age", Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy said. "He's always played well against us, always played hard against us".

Tuukka Rask stopped 29 shots for Boston, and Patrice Bergeron scored a power-play goal midway through the first on a pass from Brad Marchand. "It's good we won, now we focus, re-fuel and keep your brains ready for (Saturday)". "When you talk about Toronto, they got speed, but so do we". "Muzzy and (defence partner Nikita) Zaitsev did a great job as well".

Alex Ovechkin also scored in the first period, and John Carlson notched a hat-trick of assists, getting helpers on all three first-period goals. Tavares assisted on Marner's first goal. Yes, it's just one game, but tonight was a far cry from Boston's 5-1 drubbing of the Leafs to open last year's playoffs.

"We went through our lineup", Cassidy said. "We really kept our composure". "We have to be better". Then in the second period, the old bugaboo of the short-handed goal against came back to haunt the Bruins. It was Toronto's first successful postseason penalty shot since Mats Sundin converted in 1999. "I've been thinking just to hit the net and get it on it".

Mitch Marner scored twice, including the game victor, as Toronto beat the Bruins 4-1 on Thursday.

Hurricanes rookie Andrei Svechnikov scored twice in a span of 2:19 in the third period to cut the deficit to 3-2, but Lars Eller put it away with an empty-net goal in the final minute. However, after netting his second goal of the contest, the Bruins must be concerned about the totality of his game. "Mitchie's got that confidence level to pretty much shake anything off, move forward and look to the future". Then the Leafs hit the ice in Boston to play Game 2 of their series on a day that also features Blue Jays and Toronto FC games - the baseball team is home to 2018 Cy Young victor Blake Snell and the Tampa Bay Rays, while the soccer squad is in Seattle for a rematch of the 2016 and '17 MLS Cups.

On Thursday they played sloppy defense, especially on offense in the Toronto zone by turning the puck over several times, which led to a number of breakaways and odd-man rushes for the Leafs.

There would be no such comeback on this night.

I'm pretty sure I didn't take the Washington Capitals to take the Cup a year ago, but I did take them to win the first two rounds, including a win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

"We need to elevate our game again", Leafs centre Auston Matthews said.
