Swedish Environmental Activist Greta Thunberg, 16, Nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

Protesters including the Raging Grannies, as well Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility, Friends of the Columbia Gorge and high school students from the Portland Youth Climate Council, gathered in front of City Hall on Wednesday, March 13, to oppose the expansion of Zenith Terminals, which could increase the number of oil trains moving through Portland.

Greta Thunberg, a 16-year-old Swedish activist who is a prominent voice in the fight against climate change, has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize this year. "We need our Earth, we need a home, and we need a good place for the future generations to grow up in".

Ms Ardern's support of the students contrasts with politicians in Australia and Britain who have rebuked them for cutting class. There are also students in other parts of the province, including Bridgewater and Amherst, organizing their own walkouts.

Portland students will be joining others across the country and around the globe as they walk out of school tomorrow to strike.
