New Delhi is world's most polluted capital, Beijing eighth

Seven of the top 10 polluted cities in 2018 were in India, including Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Bhiwandi, Noida, Patna and Lucknow. Beijing ranks now as the 122nd most polluted city in the world in 2018 and China, the 12th most polluted country in the world.

In two months of a year ago, the AQI in Gurugram - as measured by levels of fine particulate matter known as PM 2.5 - was above 200.


Globally, the alarming increase in air pollution is expected to cause 7 million premature deaths in the next year.

According to data released by the non-profit organization, IQAir AirVisual and Greenpeace, 15 out of the 20 most polluted cities in the world belong to India. Delhi - a frequent fixture on global pollution hotspots - was only the 11th most noxious city behind Lahore, Pakistan (10th) and Hotan, China (8th).

The report accompanies an extended online interactive display of the world's most polluted cities, allowing further exploration of air quality across different regions and sub-regions in 2018, it said.


Countrywise, India ranks third on the world ranking for highest PM 2.5 concentration, which are tiny particles believed to the most harmful for human health.

Stressing on the world economy Yeb Sano, Executive Director of Greenpeace South East Asia said "Air pollution steals our livelihoods and our futures, but we can change that".

Out of 50 cities that have the poorest air quality, 25 Indian cities are in the list with Gurugram being number one, as per a report by Greenpeace and AirVisual.


Air pollution is likely to cause the death of almost seven million people around the world in the next year and will cost around $225 billion to the global economy, he added.
