NASA boss says first person on Mars will 'absolutely' be female

NASA said women are at the forefront of agency's upcoming plans. We are proud to have worked collaboratively with The Boeing Company to develop the Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage (ICPS) for the first flight of the SLS.

NASA's Orion spacecraft, which is powered by the European Service Module, will transport astronauts to the Gateway by giving the crewed vehicle a final push to inject it into translunar orbit.

"I think one of the reasons NASA is opening these samples now is that a lot of people involved in the early days (of the Apollo missions) ... are getting old", Welten said.

"NASA is committed to making sure we have a broad and diverse set of talent", Bridenstine said.

Such a scenario could mean that the SLS' first true liftoff to space would have astronauts aboard, with no preliminary uncrewed launch.

"We have fantastic capability that exists right now that we can use off the shelf in order to accomplish this objective", he said.

The two most capable "off the shelf" rockets in the US fleet right now are ULA's Delta IV and SpaceX's Falcon Heavy.

Then, molecules thermally desorb and can bounce to a nearby location that is cold enough for the molecule to stick or populate the Moon's extremely tenuous atmosphere or exosphere, until temperatures drop and the molecules return to the surface. Under Constellation, NASA was building a different set of rockets, Ares I and Ares V, and a crew capsule, Orion. The work of NASA is also said to be crucial to the economy and security.

One skeptical senator reminded him: "This is 2019...."

The agency is now exploring options for meeting that deadline using "commercial capabilities", Bridenstine said.

Even as a veteran astronaut with four Shuttle missions, 602 orbits of the earth and more than 15 million miles of space travel under his belt, Bob Cabana struggled to compete with Nasa's rousing video address to its workforce at Kennedy Space Centre.

It also decided that private companies would launch a probe towards Jupiter's moon Europa. "It is also clear that this approach would require additional funding, since the idea is to undertake both this mission and to continue development of the SLS apace".

Producing the SLS in 43 states means 86 senators have something to lose if the SLS program goes south, leading some snarky commentators to label it the "Senate Launch System".

Under the Trump administration's federal budget request for 2020, the following NASA science missions were proposed to be cancelled: two Earth Science missions and the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST).
