"To be honest, I don't enjoy losing, especially in a tournament like this, a tournament where I have had plenty of success in the past", Djokovic said.

While it is being assumed it was just one of the bad days for Nole, there are debates that Nole was under pressure due to off-field controversy.

Djokovic was playing his first tournament since lifting a record seventh Australian Open title in January and had won eight of nine prior meetings with Kohlschreiber, but he could find no answer for the German in a 6-4, 6-4 loss.

Djokovic remains alive in doubles with partner Fabio Fognini.

Djokovic displayed his frustration by banging his racquet against his foot until it crumpled, but it did nothing to improve his fortunes as Kohlschreiber opened the second set with a break.

"You just have to deal with it, move on, turn the next page", Djokovic said. They had a chance to go up by a double break but failed to convert a break point in the seventh game.

"I really wasn't focusing so much on her".

But he'll also be putting in some solid singles practice. "So just things worked out for me", Bencic said. "I'm not at my highest level, but slowly building, and hopefully I'll be able to peak in Miami".

He will play 19-year-old Canadian Denis Shapovalov, the 24th seed who beat 10th seeded Croatian Marin Cilic 6-4, 6-2.

But the five-time defending champion was clearly not at his best when the match resumed today, suffering a straight-sets defeat (6-4, 6-4) to leave the tournament in the third round.

Spain's Muguruza, a two-time Grand Slam champion now ranked 20th in the world, out-lasted seventh-ranked Kiki Bertens 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 while Williams, a seven-time Grand Slam victor, beat Germany's Mona Barthel 6-4, 6-4.

"Take care and good night, know this the good life, hot tubs and court time, Thursday we back alright!" he rapped at the end of the song, which got a roar of approval from the audience.

"I played a pretty great match", Bencic said after her fifth consecutive victory over a Top-10 opponent.

"When I hit a good return, I was wondering why this didn't happen in singles".

Venus Williams is into the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Mona Barthel.

Federer next faces Britain's Kyle Edmund, who beat Macedonian qualifier Radu Albot 6-3, 6-3.

Among the other games, Federer and Nadal won their respective games, against Stan Wawrinka (6-3, 6-4) and Diego Schwartzman (6-3, 6-1).
