This was India's final ODI before the 2019 World Cup.

The trio was banned for their part in the so-called sandpaper scandal during the third test against South Africa in Cape Town previous year, while Darren Lehmann quit as coach in the wake of a Cricket Australia investigation. His three wickets at Ranchi were key to Australia notching their first win in the series and he followed that performance up with a fifer at Mohali.

First time Australia have defeated India in a Twenty20 series, which was their first limited-overs series win in over a year. Australia won their first ODI series since 2017 and their first in India in a decade.

India's quest to find right combinations for the upcoming World Cup ended with a 35 run defeat in the decisive fifth ODI against Australia as they lost the series 2-3 in New Delhi on Wednesday.

Major General Asif Ghafoor, the director-general of Inter-Services Public Relations, won the internet when he mercilessly trolled the Indian cricket team following their 3-2 thrashing at the hands of Australia.

"I don't think any team starts the World Cup as favourites".

"People have written us off for quite a while", captain Aaron Finch said. The series came against the backdrop of India blaming Pakistan for the Pulwama attack and then crossing the Line of Control into the Pakistani airspace. At the moment, ambiguity exists over the workload management of World Cup-bound players, with the BCCI and the franchises yet to reach a consensus on this issue. Unapologetically passionate about indie music and the South Australian Redbacks, Daniel's chief cricketing achievement was to dismiss Wisden Almanack editor Lawrence Booth in the 2010 Ashes press match in Perth - a rare Australian victory that summer.

Michael Clarke also tweeted his congratulations as Glenn Maxwell and Pat Cummins soaked up the historic win.

The Indian vice-captain had a disastrous start in the five-match series against Australia as he managed to score just 51 runs from first three matches.

Usman Khawaja celebrates his century in the fifth ODI.

None more so than man of the series Khawaja.

"To come back from 2-0 down was a terrific effort from the guys".

It was a tough series no doubt, and beating India at home always calls for a celebration. But Khawaja and Handscomb denied the hosts any further opportunities.

The assuring presence of skipper Virat Kohli (20) did not last long as he too departed early, caught behind while attempting a cut off Marcus Stoinis.

Only some late order hitting from Jhye Richardson (29 off 21) and Cummins (15 off 8) pushed Australia to a competitive 272.

Rishabh Pant (w), Kedar Jadhav, Vijay Shankar, Ravindra Jadeja, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah. It was possibly a conscious decision by the team management, to test players before the World Cup squad is announced. "We are more or less sorted with what we want to do", Kohli quipped at the post-match presentation, before adding: "There's just one spot in the team that's up for discussion, while the rest is pretty much sorted for us".
