Winter Storm Maya Arrives in the Pacific Northwest

There is a winter storm warning in effect beginning at noon PST for portions of northwest and west central Washington, including Seattle, Everett, Tacoma, Bremerton, Bellevue, North Bend, Redmond, Kent, Port Angeles, Sequim, Oak Harbor, and Mount Vernon, according to the NWS.

Meanwhile, cold temperatures are expected in the region overnight Saturday, with temperatures dropping to 15-20 degrees and the wind chill in the single digits. Near whiteout conditions are expected in higher elevations are expected at times.

Maya will head to the Plains and Midwest Monday, where heavy snow is expected to accumulate across the northern Plains and upper Midwest. The Washington Department of Transportation suggested that anyone who could work from home or leave work early do.

"A powerful storm system diving southward brought heavy snow to much of Seattle over the past 24 hours", said AccuWeather Meteorologist Brett Rossio.


In California, more than 120 visitors and staff members were rescued Thursday after being trapped by up to 7 feet of snow in a Sierra Nevada resort for five days.

Elsewhere, more than 148,000 customers lost power in MI following days of freezing rain.

Drivers are being advised to expect a longer commute than normal.

About 200 flights were canceled at Seattle-Tacoma and Portland global airports Saturday, roughly matching the number of Friday cancellations.


Snowfall from Sunday and Monday lingered into the week as below-freezing temperatures gripped the area.

"This is an extreme weather event, and offering shelter is the most important thing we can do right now", he said.

The snow is likely to slow or stop Saturday morning, but two more snowstorms are expected to hit early next week.
