Northam, who is a year into his four-year term, announced his intention to stay during an afternoon Cabinet meeting, according to a senior official was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

"The allegations against Justin Fairfax are serious and credible", former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe tweeted Friday.

Meredith Watson claims she was raped by Fairfax in a "premeditated and aggressive assault" while both were students at Duke University back in 2000. The Associated Press is not reporting details of the allegation because it has not corroborated it. He denied the allegation again on Wednesday as his accuser came forward.

"It has been a painful week for all Virginians, and I am deeply sorry for causing this distraction from your important work".

Virginia's congressional Democratic delegation have hinted at a possible pathway for easing a week-old political crisis that has embroiled Governor Ralph Northam and two fellow Democrats at the top of the state's executive branch.

Calls for Northam's resignation among Virginia's Democratic establishment were almost universal early on, with at least five Democratic candidates for the White House joining the chorus.

The improbable scenario of the governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general being forced to resign en masse has raised the prospect of the Democrats losing the governorship to a Republican without an election.

"As with Dr. Tyson's allegation, it needs to be investigated thoroughly because it impacts his ability to continue to serve the Commonwealth", the statement read. But the governor left his long-term plans open, saying he would reassess his decision not to resign if it became clear he had no viable path forward.

The Republican Party of Virginia also released a statement, calling for an immediate investigation into the claims. That pressure has tapered off as a cascade of scandals involving top politicians has rocked the state.

Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax, a 39-year-old African-American, has meanwhile been accused of forcing himself sexually on a woman 14 years ago.

But the statement suggested a readiness to forgive the embattled state attorney general, Mark Herring, who also admitted to a blackface episode in 1980 while in college. Should all three Democrats resign, the governorship would go to the state House Speaker, who is a Republican.

"I think it dredges up very hurtful, painful things from the past".

"She said she couldn't speak, but she was trying to get up and he kept pushing her down", said Ms Adams.

"I will not request the Governor's resignation". Chap Petersen, a Democrat, said in a statement.

The N-word is used at least once.

Northam said last Friday that he was in the picture.

Northam and his team are going the obvious, pandering route to fix his image.
