One witness who filmed the incident, 21-year-old Cyprien Royer, said it had been caused by a flash-ball grenade fired by police to disperse the crowd.

Police said 31 demonstrators had been arrested Saturday as scuffles broke out between protesters and police.

In the south of France police blocked yellow vest leader Maxime Nicolle from crossing into Italy to join forces with Italian demonstrators.

One protester, a photographer for the Yellow Vest demonstrations, had his right hand blown off by a police grenade.

In the eastern city of Saint Etienne, eight police officers were slightly hurt during clashes with some protesters on the fringes of the march there, local police said.
