Pelosi names House panel on climate change

As Executive Director Alexandra Rojas explained, "The Green New Deal offers a positive solution to match the scale of our nation's biggest crises - climate change, structural racism, and skyrocketing inequality".

Nearly every major new economic initiative proposed by Democrats - the Green New Deal, Medicare for all, debt-free college - has a common feature: Unlike most current social programs, it would benefit younger Americans at the expense of older Americans. 'The green dream or whatever they call it, nobody knows what it is, but they're for it right?' she said, mocking the democratic socialist's effort.

"She did in fact invite me to be on the committee", the New York Democrat said.

In drafting the proposal, Ocasio-Cortez and her fellow progressive lawmakers appear to have envisioned that the trillions of dollars in new government spending it would require would be financed entirely on credit.

"We hope that all of the committees of jurisdiction will be very involved", she said. However, many Democrats including a number of 2020 presidential hopefuls have expressed their support for a "Green New Deal".

She spoke Thursday, shortly before Democrats, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of NY, unveiled legislation aimed at combating climate change and creating jobs in renewable energy.

In the past decade, she has already seen Democrats try and fail to pass a sweeping cap-and-trade climate law.

The Green New Deal was put into the media spotlight by a youth coalition called the Sunrise Movement and Ocasio-Cortez, 29, the youngest woman to serve in Congress.

The ding by Pelosi comes just as Ocasio-Cortez and Sen.

The proposal also calls for moving away from nuclear power, according to a fact sheet on the plan distributed by Ocasio-Cortez's office, which some climate activists favor as a carbon-free energy source. Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico, Suzanne Bonamici of Oregon, Julia Brownley of California, Sean Casten of Illinois, Jared Huffman of California, Mike Levin of California, Donald McEachin of Virginia and Joe Neguse of Colorado.

Pelosi said the new panel, which also will include six Republicans, "will be vital in advancing ambitious progress for our planet".

Markey, a veteran Congressman from MA, introduced sweeping climate change legislation a decade ago, which passed in the House but was blocked in the Senate.

A joint resolution drafted by them and expected to be introduced Thursday sets a goal to meet all power demand in the USA through clean, renewable and zero-emission energy sources by 2030.

Most of the Democratic presidential candidates, including Senators Kirsten Gillibrand of New York; Kamala Harris of California; Elizabeth Warren of MA; and Cory Booker of New Jersey have also broadly endorsed the idea behind the Green New Deal.
