Australian Open women's champion Naomi Osaka has shocked the tennis world after announcing she has split from her coach.

The 34-year-old German coach spent eight years as Serena Williams' hitting partner, before spending a short stint with Caroline Wozniacki prior to his involvement with Osaka.

She also thanked Bajin and wished him "all the best in the future".

Top-ranked Naomi Osaka split ties with coach Sascha Bajin on Monday, more than two weeks after she won the Australian Open.

Interestingly, Osaka's split with Bajin follows a pattern among the last few Grand Slam champions as both French Open champion Simona Halep and Wimbledon victor Angelique Kerber have parted ways with the coach that helped them win the Majors. They had been working together since before the start of the 2018 tennis year. "Thank you for letting me be part of this", he said.

The US based player has enjoyed a meteoric rise to the big time after leaping from 72 in the world to number one in the past 12 months after beginning to work with Bajin in the off-season of 2017.

Under Bajin, Osaka won both the US Open and the Australian Open to rank World No. 1.

Those back-to-back victories made Osaka the first woman to win two major championships in a row since Williams picked up four straight in 2014-15.
