Orlando Apollos rout Atlanta in AAF debut, 40

For one thing, whatever they're paying Steve Spurrier, it isn't enough.

Nobody was sure how this league would be received, but being the second watched show of the night is pretty good proof that people want football around the clock. Spurrier led the Apollos to a 40-6 rout of Atlanta, where he broke out some imaginative play-calling, including an exciting "Philly-Special" play that resulted in a touchdown.

Hall of Famer Willie Lanier is an executive in the league office, where former Pittsburgh Steelers stars Hines Ward (head of football operations) and Troy Polamalu (head of player relations) also work.

"We know we're going to have some tricks up our sleeve", Gilbert said about playing in Spurrier's system. Of course, they were.

Polian will catch half of the opening-weekend games in the eight-team league. For the quarterbacks, a four-round draft was held that allowed teams to protect one player from their region or pick from the entire pool.

Along the way, Spurrier took a page out of the Philadelphia Eagles' playbook.

After a month-long training camp in San Antonio, the Apollos returned home to Orlando with their final 52-player roster to prepare to officially kick-off their first season within the AAF at UCF's Spectrum Stadium on Saturday against the Atlanta Legends. But if you weren't sure who to root for, we might be able to help. The game will be televised on CBS Sports Network.

In a nice touch, Kurt Warner is the pregame and halftime analyst for Saturday night's games on CBS. Sunday will now feature two more games worth of action in the new pro football league, and the nightcap of the festivities will feature the Salt Lake Stallions traveling to face the Arizona Hotshots in Western Conference action. The Steelers are actually an affiliate team for the Birmingham Iron. A ninth member of the officiating crew, a "SkyJudge," will sit in the press box and "use real-time technology to correct clear errors involving player safety anytime during a game, and pass interference inside of five minutes left in the fourth quarter", the AP reported.

In overtime, each team will get the ball only once with a first and goal from the 10. The game will end in a tie if neither team scores.

Onside kicks have been replaced by an onside conversion.
