Monae also highlighted the huge year for women at the Grammys: Five of the eight album of the year nominees are women, and six of the eight best new artist contenders are female acts.

He is nominated for eight Grammys this year, inlcuding two for Best Rap Song, Best Song, and Rap Performance.

Additionally, J Balvin, Young Thug, Ricky Martin and Arturo Sandoval will join Cabello for the show's opening, while Fantasia, Yolanda Adams and Andra Day will pay homage to the late Aretha Franklin.

Gaga, victor of six Grammys, is now nominated for Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, and Best Song Written For Visual Media for "Shallow" and Best Pop Solo Performance for "Joanne". Vladimir Duthiers spoke with Keys ahead of the award show. Also, current nominee Dua Lipa will perform with Grammy victor St. Vincent.

His reps declined to comment on why the star didn't want to grace this year's stage, despite doing so last year. Childish Gambino has five nominations.

The industry's annual gala draws eye rolls every year from critics who say the winners are too white and too male, but for the second consecutive year black hip-hop artists dominated the nominations across the board.

Even Grammys producer Ken Ehrlich has admitted the "problem" over hip-hop artists who feel undervalued by the Academy, which includes more than 13,000 music professionals. "When they don't take home the big prize, the regard of the academy, and what the Grammys represent, continue to be less meaningful to the hip-hop community, which is sad".

Another star who notably will not be perfoming at this year's awards is Ariana Grande.

"I've kept my mouth shut but now you're lying about me". She's the first woman to host the show in more than a decade. "As an artist who speaks to the power of music for good, a role model, and a spokesperson for change, we are thrilled to have her on board for what's sure to be an unforgettable Grammy Awards". "Know that I support you - win or lose", Monae said. "It was when my creativity [and] self-expression was stifled by you, that I decided not to attend".
