The relaunch season for the XFL kicks off in 2020 on Saturday, February 8 and Sunday, February 9, the weekend following the NFL's Super Bowl.

The 58-year-old Stoops was vague about the reasons when he abruptly retired less than two years ago.

Jim Ross noted on Twitter that he is close friends with Stoops and he is very excited about the news and he praised the league for hiring him.

Coach Stoops is the winningest coach in Oklahoma history with a 190-48 overall record.

The official relaunch of the XFL spring professional league will not take place until 2020, but a major head coaching/front office announcement expected this week should increase excitement to a higher level than it's been since the revelation of the league's return. I thought one of the best things I ever did in my career was getting my first staff together at OU. Stoops also played as a defensive back for Iowa from 1979-1982. That's exciting to me.

Stoops was named coach and general manager of the Dallas team Thursday at the home of baseball's Texas Rangers.
