A mega roadshow in Lucknow that drew thousands grandly marked Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's entry into active politics on Monday.

They will be accompanied by Congress President Rahul Gandhi - all three visiting the crucial state for the first time after the appointments were announced last month.

She has been put in charge of the party in Uttar Pradesh state, which sends a large number of lawmakers to parliament and often plays a crucial role in deciding who forms the government. Priyanka who today conducted a roadshow in the state capital along with party president and her brother Rahul Gandhi is being seen as a serious challenger to several bigwigs, including the Prime Minister himself.

At one point at Burlington crossing, Priyanka Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Scindia and the other leaders had to lower their heads and eventually dismount from the truck to escape dangerously low hanging electric wires. "Everyone knows that when Priyanka Gandhi is in Delhi she wears jeans and top but dons saree and sindoor when she comes to the constituencies".

Priyanka, or PGV as she is commonly referred to among her party workers, debuted on Twitter weeks after getting appointed the Congress general secretary for Uttar Pradesh East. "Come align with us and bring change to Uttar Pradesh".

Priyanka Gandhi has been tasked with reviving the party in UP.

Since the announcement of Priyanka's entry into politics, India's financial crime-fighting agency Enforcement Directorate has questioned her husband, Robert Vadra, in a case relating to alleged ownership of 1.9 million pounds ($2.45 million) of undisclosed assets overseas. "The youth of Uttar Pradesh need a roadmap for the future and the state needs change", he said. His lawyer and Congress have dismissed the charges as politically motivated.

From 21 seats in the 2009 general election in Uttar Pradesh, Congress' tally fell to just two in 2014.
