Another big female victor was Cardi B. The 26-year-old Instagram personality-turned-pop superstar became the first woman to win the Grammy for Best Rap Album.

Cardi later dedicated her award to the late rapper Mac Miller, who was nominated with her for Best Rap Album. "I worked hard for my motherfucking album".

The rapper, who is now one of only four female rappers to receive the prestigious accolade, posted an expletive filled rant at critics who claimed she didn't deserve the win, before quickly deleting the post and then disappearing from Instagram altogether.

Later in the show, Offset joined Cardi onstage as she accepted the award for Best Rap Album for her 2018 LP, Invasion of Privacy.

"He was like you're going to do this album", she said of Offset.

'I wanna keep on saying thank you, thank you, thank you so much, ' she started.

Cardi admitted she was nervous, joking when she took the stage, "The nerves are so bad".

Despite her stream-of-consciousness style on social media, Cardi has proven a sharp student of the rap game, prioritizing the formal aspects of writing and studying the work of her predecessors.

Holding the trophy in her white-gloved hands, Cardi B thanked "you husband" and the couple's daughter, who was born seven months to the date.

She added that not only did she pour her heart and soul into the record but she did it while being pregnant and keeping that a secret from the industry.

While inundated with congratulatory messages for winning her first Grammy Award on Sunday, Cardi B accidentally thanked late legend Tom Petty for a bunch of flowers.
