Paris police say there was an explosion and fire at a bakery, near the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris, which was believed to be caused by a gas leak.

The explosion took place on the Rue de Trevise, causing fire and chaos on the adjacent streets, local witnesses and journalists report. Once they arrived, they had to evacuate people who were unable to leave buildings affected by the blast.

There has been a loud explosion in the centre of Paris, police have confirmed. He said more than 200 firemen were involved in the rescue operation.

"There was broken glass everywhere, storefronts were blown out and windows were shattered up to the third and fourth floors", said 38-year-old David Bangura.

One man staying across the road from the bakery said the blast blew out his windows, with debris spread across streets.

Weekly protests by the yellow vest movement, which is railing against the economic policies of French President Emmanuel Macron, were scheduled for Saturday.
