"I thought because he's not playing there at the moment, he wouldn't be in there (England squad) in front of the ones already in there, plus he's not been in their youth system and come through like he was with ours and Gareth Southgate was running theirs for a long time".

Rice is eligible to play for the Republic of Ireland due to his Cork grandparents and the versatile midfielder has represented Ireland at underage level since the age of 15.

Arsenal went down thanks to Declan Rice's first West Ham goal - in a tight affair at the London Stadium.

But the London-born player has refused to fully commit himself to either England or Ireland, having not played a competitive game for the latter yet.

Rice was Man of the Match for the Hammers on Saturday, scoring the winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Arsenal.

"I've spoken to him about it".

Speaking at the Soccer Writers of Ireland awards last night, McCarthy said: "I spoke to Gareth and he saw him as a centre-back".

Some neat and intelligent touches around the box made him a central part of West Ham's attacking play and he came away with a deserved assist from his first match back in the English top flight.

When quizzed on Rice's best position, Antonio said: "I would say holding midfield is his best position because he just breaks everything up".

"I think he's doing the right thing by taking his time and thinking about his situation". He's going to be playing for either team.

"I hope he will take the best decision for everyone". If an opposition full-back goes up, he's able to go out wide to deal with it.

Looking at the chances in the 90 minutes for them and us, I think maybe the result is not what we deserved.

"The club is working but I am happy with the players".
