An on-duty bus driver in Milwaukee knew what she had to do when she saw a young boy wandering around alone near busy streets.

The footage shows the baby running barefoot on a freeway overpass in December.

Ivic stopped her bus, darted across the street, picked up the crying child and carried him onto her bus, where passengers could be heard saying, "Oh my God!"

As for Ivic, who moved from Serbia to Milwaukee 12 years ago, she said she was just doing what was right.

Irena Ivic spotted the toddler while driving on a highway overpass.

Another passenger handed over her coat to help bundle up the infant - and before long, he fell asleep in Ivic's arms, who is shown lightly kissing him on the head.

Ivic said she was grateful she could keep the boy safe, MCTS said in a video about the incident.

The 19-month-old had been cold and scared but was otherwise unharmed, police said.

The baby was reunited with her father and Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele praised Ivic during a commendation ceremony, WISN reported.

"I absolutely love kids".

Authorities believe the child was left with her mother, who may have been experiencing a mental health issue.

NOTE: Police first said the baby was a boy but later clarified that the child is actually a girl.
