The percent of outpatient visits attributed to influenza-like illnesses in the current flu season was 1.13 percent as of January 12.

This year's influenza season to date has taken a less severe turn than the previous season, indicating to state public health officials more Iowans heeded the warnings to get a flu shot.

Dr. Hu says that this season's shot gives patients a lot of protection against contracting the illness, especially when 90 to 95 percent of the flu cases reported have been from H1N1.

"The flu vaccine is always good to get every season", McConnell said. In Greene County, the most recent reports show 362 confirmed flu cases with 267 of those reported in the past month. "But even on the downslope of the epidemic curve, there will be activity for several more weeks". Last year, a 21-year-old aspiring personal trainer died from complications of the flu just days after he first started having symptoms. In industrialized countries, most deaths associated with influenza occur among people age 65 or older.

Parents should consult their healthcare provider if their child has a fever, fatigue or generally isn't feeling well, Warner said. These symptoms are less common with a cold.

"Influenza is a serious contagious disease that can lead to hospitalization", Warner wrote. No government agency tallies the number of flu-related school closings; however CNN has unofficially counted school districts in at least 12 states that have closed for one day or longer as a result of flu outbreaks.

Wash hands with soap and water and use an alcohol-based hand rub when soap and water aren't available will help. It is transmitted via droplets from an infected person through coughing, talking and sneezing, and through contact with the surfaces, material and clothing contaminated with discharges of an infected person.

Other recommendations for preventing the spread of germs include staying away from people who are sick, when possible.

Warner said it's not too late to get vaccinated since the flu season is likely to continue into April. They say it could protect you and others.
