Yankees, Phillies Turn To Alternatives With Corbin Off Market

It might not be long before we have our first major free-agent signing of the 2018-2019 MLB offseason.

Before Corbin met with the Yankees last Thursday the only other two teams he reportedly met with were the Nats and the Phillies. According to the general consensus, the Yankees, having already picked up James Paxton in trade, were sticking to five years for Corbin and wouldn't budge.

Free-agents Happ and Eovaldi are both steps down in quality from Corbin, but they wouldn't require the six-year deal that Corbin desperately wanted.

Corbin, 29, will nearly certainly get the most lucrative contract of any available pitcher.

The Washington Nationals landed Patrick Corbin with a 6-year, $140 million deal, outbidding the Philadelphia Phillies and going an extra year compared to the New York Yankees.

For a Yankees team that has made starting pitching a priority this offseason, Corbin was an initial favorite to land in the Bronx.

Philadelphia might be willing to give Corbin his biggest offer since the team is seemingly ready to outspend everyone this winter. The deal will be for six seasons, keeping Corbin in a Nationals uniform through the 2025 season.

Washington spending a boatload of money on Corbin may reduce their chances of signing Harper.

The 29 year-old lefthander is coming off a season in which he went 11-7 with a career low 3.15 ERA (70 ER/200 IP) and 1.05 WHIP.

Corbin, who has played his entire major league career for the Arizona Diamondbacks, joins a rotation in Washington that already includes three-time Cy Young Award victor Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg. He was an All-Star with a 3.41 ERA in 208.1 innings in 2013.

Corbin went 14-13 with a 4.03 ERA and a 1.42 ERA in 2017.

The left-handed Corbin, who left the Arizona Diamondbacks, joins a Nationals starting rotation that already includes three-time Cy Young Award victor Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg.
