George H.W. Bush is set to embark on his final tour of Washington as a nation prepares to bid farewell to its 41st president.

He was the son of a US senator, and patriarch of a family as successful in electoral politics as any in America, including the 43rd president, George W. Bush, and former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, who unsuccessfully ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016.

Bush received the two-year-old Labrador in June from America's VetDogs charity. He died Friday at his Houston home at age 94, and his body is heading to Washington for a state funeral.

"Mission complete", McGrath tweeted, showing Sully the dog. He will also be on hand for the arrival ceremony for Bush in the Capitol rotunda Monday evening.

President Donald Trump has declared Wednesday, Dec. 6, a Day of National Mourning.

CNN reported that Sully would travel with the casket to Washington, D.C., where several days of remembrance ceremonies are being held.

The yellow Lab was trained by America's VetDogs, which places service dogs and guide dogs with veterans, active-duty service members and first responders.

Sully is named after Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, the former pilot who famously landed his disabled plane in New York's Hudson River in 2009 to save the lives of 155 people. Sully's Instagram page showed the same photo.

Bush will then be returned to Houston for burial Thursday at his presidential library at Texas A&M University.

Former first lady Michelle Obama said she put her book tour on hold to "join the Bush family in celebrating President George H.W. Bush's exemplary life" at the funeral.
