President George H.W. Bush's casket headed to US Capitol

The dog - who has his own Instagram account - was named after the airline pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, who in 2009 landed a passenger jet on the Hudson River, saving all of the 150 people on board.

After services in Washington, there will be another funeral in Houston on Thursday, followed by burial at the Bush Presidential Library in College Station, Texas.

The report noted that Sully can perform a number of commands, including answering the phone and fetching specific items.


Retired Gen Colin Powell, who as chairman of the joint chiefs of staff was Bush's top military adviser, said Bush was the "perfect American" and should be remembered for "a life of quality, a life of honor, a life of honesty, a life of total concern for the American people".

Jeb Bush and his wife, Columba, arrived in Washington this morning to join the family in celebrating the life of former President George H.W. Bush. The Facebook page for the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum also shared the image.

James Baker, Bush's former secretary of state and his friend of 60 years, told CNN on Sunday he considered Bush as "the most kind and considerate person I ever knew".

Two days after Bush's death at age 94, family spokesman Jim McGrath posted a touching photograph Monday of the yellow Labrador retriever lying down in front of Bush's casket, with the accompanying phrase "Mission Complete" and the hashtag #Remembering41.

Bush will then lie in repose at St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Houston, where first lady Barbara Bush's funeral was held in April.

Trump has ordered the federal government to close on Wednesday and both the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will be closed in observance.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, the first official to speak in the Rotunda, described George HW Bush as a "humble servant" and "a principled leader".


Bush's casket is set to arrive in Washington on Monday afternoon aboard the US military airplane that's more commonly recognized as Air Force One.
