Matthews scored twice and added an assist in his return to the lineup Wednesday in a 5-3 victory over the San Jose Sharks after missing 14 games with a shoulder injury, while Nylander has been at home in Sweden waiting on a new contract. He's a big part of this team.

Nylander held out the Maple Leafs' first 26 games of the season as he sought a new contract. "There's a few easy tests we can do on the ice in 60 seconds and get it solved".

The details of the contract are as follows: Nylander will receive $41.77M over 6 years, an average annual value of $6.96M.

Essentially, Nylander gets the money he was seeking, and the Leafs get the cap hit in the out years they were seeking.

He had to sign with the Maple Leafs by Saturday in order to be eligible to play this season. "He is doing what he feels is necessary and we want him back. Sometimes it's frustrating, but I am happy to be here". Nylander has yet to play this season, staging a holdout after he and Toronto were unable to find common ground in the offseason.

"I sprinted into the room and told them I knew what happened, but didn't tell anyone", Rielly said, jokingly.

"Kyle (Dubas) and (assistant GM Brandon Pridham) and the guys did a real good job in getting that done", Babcock said after a 5-3 win over the Wild.

"I think other GMs in the league can verify it: We prefaced everything with our ambition is to sign this player long term, and that's what we're working toward".

Kasperi Kapanen is on pace for 32 goals and 57 points, but the Maple Leafs winger isn't wondering what kind of pay day that could result in next summer. "We can't wait to get him back in Toronto". The Maple Leafs are 18-18 on the year and have won their last three games.

"Having him back, it's just going to add more fire to this team and make us deeper", Marner said.

Nylander, who was born in Calgary when his father Michael played for the Flames, has 48 goals and 87 assists in 185 career games to go along with eight points (2-6) in 13 playoff outings. Mitch Marner and Travis Dermott each added two assists.
