YouTube users in some parts of the world ─ not including Pakistan ─ can now stream select films on the platform for free as long as they are willing to sit through commercial breaks, according to an AdAge report.

With little fanfare, YouTube started streaming popular ad-supported movies for free.

YouTube has created a formal collection of Hollywood movies-including some heavy-hitters like The Terminator and the Rocky series-for free viewing.

"We saw this opportunity based on user demand, beyond just offering paid movies", the company said. Rohit Dhawan, YouTube's director of product management, told AdAge.

It's not clear what sort of deal have been struck between YouTube, movie studios and advertisers, but it's clearly something that's good news for consumers. Many of them are from the MGM library, which includes the original Terminator, the Rocky movies, Legally Blonde, Steve Martin's Pink Panther 2 and Four Weddings And a Funeral.

For the time being, there are only about 100 movies available on this new ad-supported venture on YouTube. The latest stats reveal that we've already reached a point where 20 percent of YouTube is watched via a smart TV and it's growing. Walmart's streaming service Vudu, as well as Tubi, offer their own selection of free films.
