UFC 230: Daniel Cormier stands firm on retirement plan

He'll defend his heavyweight championship at UFC 230 tonight (Sat. November 3, 2018) from Madison Square Garden. There was a time when I needed these guys just to get to the big money fights and making more money is nice but I've got plenty of money.

Add to that, Jon Jones is about to compete again at UFC 232 and he stands as the only person to hold a victory over Cormier in his entire MMA career. Then on October 9, the UFC announced that Daniel Cormier would defend the heavyweight title against No. 2-ranked Derrick Lewis.

Whether Lewis eats some Popeyes before his fight with Cormier at UFC 230 remains to be seen.

"He feels like it would be ideal to fight a guy like me that don't have as much skills on short notice before the Jones fight and he thinks it's going to be an easy fight for him". He doesn't go to a UFC and watch a fight. This time, I will buckle my heels into the mat.

"Isn't it unbelievable that it took 10 years (to get the recognition), but it is what it is", Cormier said Thursday from media day for UFC 230, which he is headlining with a heavyweight title defence against Derrick Lewis.

"I've been doing nothing but cardio. I (called out) Manuwa and then Jones", Cormier said. "I don't want to seem like he can just toss me around". Fist fighting every day for stupid stuff.

Lewis has done his best to undersell himself and hope to catch Cormier napping, but Cormier isn't one to fall for such tactics. With few options available, the promotion announced that the relatively unknown Eubanks would be fighting Valentina Shevchenko for the vacant women's 125 pounds title. I didn't like the visual of him pushing me and me flying back like that.

That's why Cormier says he would potentially consider sticking around past his retirement deadline of March 2019 if the right opportunity presented itself but his decision won't be changed by Lesnar, Jones or the amount of monetary gain on the table to delay the end date for his career.

After winning nine of his last ten fights, the surging Derrick Lewis is taking a shot at double champion Daniel Cormier and a shot at winning the UFC heavyweight belt.
