A young Texas couple died in a helicopter crash less than two hours after their wedding.

William Byler, the groom's grandfather, confirmed to a local ABC affiliate on Sunday that the aircraft went down at the family's ranch in Uvalde, west of San Antonio.

HuffPost has contacted the National Transport Safety Board for comment.

According to KENS5 in San Antonio, Uvalde Police received a call from an aviation monitoring center around midnight Saturday notifying them of a possible down aircraft north of Uvalde County.

Their deaths were first announced by The Houstonian, the independent student newspaper of Sam Houston State University, where the newlyweds were both seniors.

Engagement photos posted on the website show Mr Byler in his cowboy hat embracing Ms Ackerman.

And friend Madi Wagner said she took comfort that the couple's last day alive was spent celebrating with their loved ones, adding: 'I believe it was truly the best day of their lives'. "When Bailee met Will she completely fell in love".

Elliss said Ackerman was set to graduate in December and Will in May. "They will be greatly missed by many".

Authorities located the crashed helicopter around daybreak, the Sheriff's Office said.

The Federal Aviation Administration, which is assisting with the investigation, said the helicopter "crashed under unknown circumstances in a remote area".
