Ginsburg was Clinton's first Supreme Court pick. The severity depends in part on whether the ribs are cracked or broken all the way through, and how many are broken.

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was hospitalized after she fell in her office and fractured three ribs, the court said Thursday. In 2012, Ginsburg fractured two ribs. She is still in the hospital for "observation and treatment".

Even in her advancing years, Ginsburg has a widely publicized regular exercise routine, known as the "RBG workout", which includes push-ups, planks and arm curls.

"She went home, but after experiencing discomfort overnight, went to George Washington University Hospital early this morning", the court said in a statement.

This report will be updated as further information becomes available.

Ginsburg was appointed in 1993 and is the oldest justice on the panel.

But she has never missed Supreme Court arguments.

"I'm now 85", she told CNN. The next oldest justice is Stephen Breyer, who is 83.

Asked a year ago if she was contemplating retirement, she said, "As long as I can do the job full steam, I will do it".

There's precedent for her lengthy service, as Justices Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. and John Paul Stevens were both 90 when they retired. Justice Kavanaugh was sworn in last month.
