After CNN's Jim Acosta pressed him on why he characterized a caravan of a few thousand Central American asylum seekers hundreds of miles from the USA border as "an invasion", the president erupted.

"I think you should let me run the country", he told CNN reporter Jim Acosta when pressed further about his immigration claims.

A White House aide tried to grab the microphone from Acosta, but the CNN reporter refused to give it up, infuriating the president.

"CNN should be ashamed of itself having you working for them", Trump said, wagging a finger at Acosta.

Acosta continued to ask questions, including whether Trump was "concerned" about potential indictments coming from the Mueller probe.

Acosta then stood again to push back against Trump, referencing the pipe bombs that were recently sent to CNN's offices.

"You are a rude bad person", he added. The way you treat Sarah Huckabee is terrible, and the way you treat other people are awful.

Alexander tried to defend Acosta, calling him a diligent reporter, which prompted Trump to say that he wasn't a fan of Alexander either.

"Just sit down, please", Trump told Acosta, who asked the president off mic about his description of the media as "the enemy of the people".

"CNN is fake news", Trump said.

But Wednesday afternoon's press conference quickly devolved into a war of words with reporters who were hungry to ask the president questions on a variety of issues.

Watch the exchange between Trump and Acosta below, then hit the comments with your reactions. And the way you treat other people is awful. "And if you did it well your ratings would be much better".

He then went on to lecture Acosta.

'The way you treat Sarah Huckabee is frightful, ' he said.

"It's such a hostile media".
