SEC dominates first College Football Playoff rankings

Alabama, Clemson, LSU and Notre Dame were the top four teams in the initial CFP rankings tonight.

Notre Dame doesn't have the same strength of schedule that LSU has in the SEC, but two games could trip up the Fighting Irish.

The CFP rankings don't include a list of other teams in consideration, such as Utah State, ranked No. 18 in this week's AP Top 25 as the top MountainWest team in that poll. Does the committee give a repeat of last season and put those two SEC teams in opposite semifinal games, setting up a possible national championship rematch?

As expected, undefeated juggernaut Alabama was ranked first, followed by Clemson, LSU and Notre Dame. I can't argue with Iowa's placement when it comes to those four two-loss teams considering the quality of each of those team's losses.

It took six games for the Iowa football team to finally get enough love to show up in the AP Poll when they made their debut at #19 after their big win over Indiana.

LSU is the only one-loss team inside the top four.

"As Coach Swinney says it doesn't really matter at this point", Choice said.

All three teams have potential pitfalls that look more risky than those Panthers.

MI (7-1) came in at No. 5, with Georgia (7-1), Oklahoma (7-1), Washington State (7-1), Kentucky (7-1) and Ohio State (7-1) rounding out the top 10.

Also, the first edition of the Playoff rankings usually does not mean too much. The last week of the regular season will be a big week not only for the Buckeyes but also the Wolverines as that game could decide who will get the final spot in the College Football Playoff. MI hosts Penn State, which came in at 14.

LSU, which has wins over Miami, Auburn, Ole Miss, Louisiana Tech, Georgia and Mississippi State, hosts Alabama Saturday night at Tiger Stadium.

Alabama and Clemson are Nos.

Some college football fans may remember the 2007 season, which was fantastic from a perspective of playing hot potato with the highest rankings in the country. The first two are excusable. "Impressive opening-season win over MI".

UCF was the highest ranked team from outside the Power Five conferences at 12th.

West Virginia travels to No. 17 Texas this weekend and closes the season at home against No. 7 Oklahoma.

"You have to recognize with six new voices around the table, six new minds on how they view the rankings and evaluate the teams, it's different", said Hocutt, who was replaced as the Big 12 representative by Castiglione.
