The worldwide friendly, set to take place on November 15, has been dubbed The Wayne Rooney Foundation global and some of the proceeds from the game will go towards the Manchester United great's charity.

The game has been earmarked to raise funds for the Wayne Rooney Foundation, which is seeking to raise over £500,000 for various children's charities including the NSPCC. It should be the greatest honour and reward playing for your country but the reality is that the MLS is nowhere near the same level as the Premier League.

He said: "It was great that Gareth Southgate called me this week to tell me he wanted me back in the England squad for the upcoming matches". Rooney will also be training with the squad as they prepare for their Nations League game v Croatia, although he is not set to feature in that one. "It's fitting that the match will be against the United States of America and I hope that both sets of fans enjoy the game".

There is a school of thought that the FA do not allow England's greatest players a dignified exit from global football but no-one can accuse them of not treating Rooney well.

"I have been hugely impressed with the progress of this young England team". Trying to help others is a particular focus of mine now through my foundation.

The 33-year-old has found a new lease of life at DC United in the MLS, however, managing 12 goals in 20 appearances to inspire the team into the playoffs.

Unfortunately, the fairytale ended this week as Rooney missed a penalty in a 3-2 penalty shootout defeat to the Columbus Crew.

"Wayne Rooney finished with England, Gareth Southgate moved on and I don't agree with this at all".

"The connection between the FA and former England players is something that has always been very important to me", Southgate said.

"We all look forward to the occasion and lending support to a number of good causes through the Wayne Rooney Foundation".
