Democrats won governorships on Tuesday in several US states that supported Republican President Donald Trump in 2016 but lost high-profile races in Florida and OH, as voters cast ballots in dozens of gubernatorial contests across the country. But blue-collar voters and rural America embraced his aggressive talk and stances.

For 16 years, Pelosi has steered the House Democrats, first as minority leader, then speaker, then minority leader again after the 2011 Republican takeover of the chamber.

Control of the lower chamber will allow Democrats to block key parts of President Trump's agenda and re-open investigations into his administration.

The U.S. midterm elections results are out: It's a split.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying declined to comment directly on the outcome but says "regardless of the result. we believe the two governments and the two peoples all want to maintain the sound and steady development of bilateral relations because we believe it is in the best interests of the worldwide community".

Democrats have also pledged to launch committee investigations of President Donald Trump and his administration. It wasn't clear what "leaks" he was referring to.

But a Republican incumbent lost to a Democrat lost in Nevada.

The voting is finished and the midterm election is finally over.

The GOP's successes were fueled by a coalition that's decidedly older, whiter, more male and less likely to have college degrees.

Record diversity on the ballot may have helped drive turnout.

A record number of women are projected to win seats in the House in a massive night for female candidates across the political spectrum. The House was also getting its first two Muslim women, MA elected its first black congresswoman, and Tennessee got its first female senator.

On Tuesday, however, the American people chose a different arrangement.

But in Wisconsin, Democrat Tony Evers pulled off a narrow win in unseating Republican incumbent Scott Walker, according to data provider DDHQ.

How intently Democrats focus on Russian Federation depends in large part on how Mueller's probe - with which they have committed not to interfere - advances between now and January.

However, Democrats did eke out a narrow win to beat Scott Walker in Wisconsin and comfortably won the governor's office in MI.

President Donald Trump has slapped punitive tariffs on $250 billion in Chinese exports to the US and threatened billions more. The winners included Democrat Mikie Sherrill, a former Navy pilot and federal prosecutor who ran for a suburban Newark seat.

They can also ask for in-person testimonies on things like the Trump administration's ties to Saudi Arabia, and any possible interference with the Justice Department.

In Kentucky, the heart of Trump country, one of the top Democratic recruits, retired Marine fighter pilot Amy McGrath, lost her bid to oust to three-term Rep. Andy Barr in the Lexington-area district. In a tweet Wednesday, he referred to the election results as a "Big Victory".

Trump dissected the elections in a combative White House news conference that stretched to almost 90 minutes as he put a defiantly glossy sheen on the mixed midterm results and stressed his party's victories in the Senate.

They bumped off three of the Democratic senators who won in Republican territory in 2012: Heidi Heitkamp in North Dakota, Claire McCaskill in Missouri, and Joe Donnelly in Indiana.

Some hurt worse than others.

In Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz fended off a strong challenge by Democratic rising star Beto O'Rourke.

Overall, the elections saw a stunning acceptance of racial, gender, and sexual diversity with voters mainly focused on "kitchen table" issues, like healthcare, rather than identity issues like immigration.

Almost 40 percent of voters cast their ballots to express opposition to the president, according to VoteCast, while one-in-four said they voted to express support for Trump.

"There are a number of candidates that are having conversations that are talking about running", he said. Minnesota and Montana are close, with a less than five percent gap between approval and disapproval.

Almost two-thirds said Trump was a reason for their vote.

Democrats also captured governorships in Michigan, Illinois and Kansas. He served as vice chairman of Trump's now-defunct commission on voter fraud.

The president was entitled to a partial victory lap.

The loss of McCarthy's path to the speakership continues what has been a sort of curse for House majority leaders.

Trump's scorched-earth campaigning came to define the 2018 campaign. Cory Booker, California Sen.

Said Warren: "This resistance began with women and it is being led by women tonight".
